A pioneer of modern and minimalist Danish design, Arne Jacobsen and the furniture pieces he created are considered seminal in the history of mid-century modern design. Born in 1902 in Copenhagen, Denmark, Jacobsen studied architecture and was influenced by the work of modern architects such as Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius. In the early 1930s, Jacobson began collaborating with furniture manufacturer Fritz Hansen. By the 1950s, though he was receiving large-scale architectural commissions throughout Denmark, Jacobsen’s skill and talent for furniture design began to eclipse his reputation as an architect. In 1951, he produced the first Ant chair, which has come to be an icon of mid-century design, and subsequent creations, such as the Seven Series, Egg chair and Swan chair, have garnered similar status in the history of design
